AWS Cost Explorer and QuickInfra: A Combined Approach to Cloud Cost Control

AWS Cost Explorer gives you the data. QuickInfra gives you the actions. Here's how to use both together to consistently reduce and control your AWS spend.

AWS Cost Explorer and QuickInfra: A Combined Approach to Cloud Cost Control

AWS Cost Explorer is excellent at showing you where your money went. It's less good at telling you what to do about it. QuickInfra's cost features bridge the gap — taking the signal from Cost Explorer data and providing direct actions to reduce waste.

Using Cost Explorer Effectively

Most teams open Cost Explorer, see the total monthly spend, and close it. The value of Cost Explorer is in the drill-down: spend by service, by region, by usage type, by tag, filtered to a specific date range. Comparing the current week's spend to the same week last month identifies what changed — a new service, a misconfiguration, a scaling event.

The key views to bookmark: Daily spend grouped by service (catch anomalies early), spend by tag (which team/project is spending what), and Reserved Instance coverage (how much of your on-demand EC2 is covered by commitments).

QuickInfra's Cost Layer

QuickInfra ingests your Cost and Usage Report data alongside AWS API data about your actual resource configurations. This combination enables insights that Cost Explorer alone can't provide: knowing both that EC2 is your biggest cost driver and that specific EC2 instances in that cost are running at 8% average CPU.

The Cost Recommendations view in QuickInfra cross-references utilisation data with spend data to produce ranked recommendations with specific, actionable items: resize this instance from m5.xlarge to m5.large, terminate this stopped instance that's accumulating EBS costs, purchase a 1-year Reserved Instance for this consistently-used instance class.

Tagging Strategy for Cost Attribution

Cost attribution requires consistent tagging. QuickInfra enforces mandatory tags on all provisioned resources: project, environment, team, and cost-centre. These tags appear in Cost Explorer groupings, enabling per-project and per-team cost breakdowns.

Teams that haven't tagged resources consistently will see an "Untagged" category in Cost Explorer that can represent significant spend. QuickInfra's compliance scan flags untagged resources as findings, gradually reducing the unattributed spend percentage.

Savings Plan Recommendations

After 30 days of usage data, QuickInfra generates Savings Plan recommendations: the compute commitment level that would cover your baseline on-demand usage, the estimated savings versus on-demand pricing, and the payback period. A 1-year Compute Savings Plan at the right commitment level typically reduces EC2 and Fargate costs by 30-40%.
